Manuel Lanzini scored a fantastic 94th minute goal of the season contender as West Ham produced a stunning comeback at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Jose Mourinho’s Spurs on Sunday evening. Here are our talking points from this GW5 clash.

Andriy Yarmolenko the unsung hero:

Yarmolenko had a massive impact off the bench- it was he who set up Vladimir Coufal with a lovely pass in the move that eventually saw Davinson Sanchez score an own goal to make it 3-2.

We’ve often criticised the Ukrainian for his lack of defensive work, but his tracking back for Gareth Bale’s 91st minute chance was fanastic. Aaron Cresswell seemed to have given up, and Bale was one on one with Lukasz Fabianski after having got past Angelo Ogbonna with ease, but in came Yarmolenko, who had sprinted past Cresswell, and he put Bale off balance just enough for the Welsh star to squander his chance.

Ogbonna “assist” helps West Ham

Another moment, perhaps as important as Yarmolenko’s defensive intervention, came from Angelo Ogbonna. He effectively blocked the onrushing Harry Winks just as Lanzini was about to take his 94th minute shot, and gave the Argentine just that extra bit of space and time. Injury update- Andriy Yarmolenko, Carlos Sanchez and Winston Reid out for the season

West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that the injured trio of Andriy Yarmolenko, Carlos Sanchez and Winston Reid will be out for the season. The Chilean gaffer also didn’t appear to be too optimistic over a return for Jack Wilshere either, saying that he had “some doubts if he will be ready”

Wilshere and Sanchez were brought in to strengthen the Hammers midfield, an area identified by Pellegrini at the beginning of the season as one requiring serious reinforcement. Declan Rice’s rise has mitigated the problems caused by their absence, but Pellegrini has been forced to use the youngster and veteran Mark Noble as a pairing in almost every match, with Pedro Obiang off the bench and Robert Snodgrass filling in there from time to time. Rice has grown in stature with every fixture following a tough start on the opening day of the season against Liverpool, and has even earned a nomination for Young Player of the Year at the 2019 London Football Awards. Five things we learnt from West Ham v Tottenham- Post Match Thoughts

Another disappointing result despite perhaps playing the better football of the two sides- that’s been the story for most of this season for Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham. Fans will count several games- Arsenal, Chelsea, Brighton and now Spurs, where the Irons deserved much more. Some would argue they played well enough to take 12 points from these four games, but the fact remains that they’ve taken only one, and find themselves stranded deep in the bottom half of the table with only 7 points to show for their efforts so far. Perhaps it should’ve been expected- the Hammers were winless in their last five at home under Martin Atkinson, the ref for the Spurs clash.

On the positive side, West Ham have now played five of the current Premier League “big” six in their opening nine games. Their next set of games appears to be far easier, but does Pellegrini have the personnel to do the job? The latest person to join the casualty ward was Andriy Yarmolenko, who ruptured his Achilles and joins a growing long term injury list which already contains the likes of Sanchez, Wilshere, Lanzini, Carroll and Reid. Hammers watch- How did West Ham’s players on international duty fare?

Several West Ham players were called up to their respective international sides during the fortnightly break following the Hammers’ loss to Brighton at the Amex.

Here, we take a look at how the players performed during the break (updated for games played till October 16, 2018)

Marko Arnautovic: Manuel Pellegrini would’ve probably preferred his talismanic striker to have had a much needed break to get over his niggles. But he played the full 90 for Austria on Friday night against Northern Ireland, and also scored the winner for Franco Foda’s side in Vienna.

Arnautovic did not play in Austria’s loss to Denmark on the 16th of October as part of a deal between the club and the Austrian FA to manage his knee injury. [Read more…]

West Ham 3-1 Manchester United 2018 Analysis and Match Report

West Ham pick up their second win of the season and pushed Jose Mourinho closer to the exit door after beating Man Utd 3-1 at the London Stadium. The Hammers had won only one of their previous 19 games against United, a side that has traditionally had the better of the Irons, but were good value for their win here, with the Red Devils looking a pale shadow of their former selves.
