Complacent Hammers surrender to Wigan

ivan ramis volleys the first wigan goal

Wigan started off well yesterday and were out of the starting blocks like a ferret up a drain pipe. With strikes from Ivan Ramis and James McArthur that was enough to do the damage although West Ham pulled back a goal late into the match via a lovely placed header by James Tomkins that gave the Wigan keeper no chance.

The Hammers were complacent and didn’t really get down to business if you ask me. They had their chances but they were not put away and at this level we all know what happens when you don’t stick your goals in the net, don’t we? It was visions of last year when we lost the plot half way through the season and went on a spree of drawing matches to let other clubs like Saints in the back door and take away our lead.

I must admit though that it was a beautiful volley from the Spaniard Ramis, who turned down West Ham by the way, to move up north to join fellow countryman Roberto Martinez. Big Sam must be biting his lip because it was only last month when Ramis scored his first goal for Wigan against West Ham in the Capital One Cup. His goal yesterday, came after 8 minutes of play and paved the way for the Irons’ second loss in 14 away outings.

Wigan could even have bettered the score at Upton Park had they been more accurate in front of goal.

After the game, Hammers boss Sam Allardyce had this to say:

We never got going. It wasn’t just the defence, we did not function anywhere near our best in any department.
“As a promoted team you must give your very best to have any chance of winning on the road.
“Wigan were looking for a first home win and we needed to put pressure on them to make them more nervous.
“The technique Ramis showed for that first goal was terrific — any striker would have been proud of it. If Robin van Persie had scored it people would never stop going on about it.
“We did try to get him but Roberto’s Spanish tipped it Wigan’s way!
“It was a disappointment to see us perform that badly. We need to pick ourselves up quickly because we’ve got some very tough games coming up.”

The Wigan front men Arouna Kone and Franco Di Santo were causing the Hammers all sorts of problems and kept Jussi Jaaskelainen on his toes for a lot of the game. With James McArthur’s goal, it gave the Latics some breathing space being 2 goals up. They started to play nice football but their cocky style nearly backfired when the ball fell sweetly to Andy Carroll after being picked out by George McCartney. If it wasn’t for a pitiful first touch that ended with the ball running out of play, the Latics would have been taking just a point from this one.

West Ham need to tighten up the defines as Jussi can’t do it all, can he? The Hammers also need to put away their chances. Football is a very unforgiving game and if you don’t find the net with the chances you do get then it’s game over. I’m sure Sam will borrow Fergie’s hairdryer and give his boys the rocket they so deserve. Come on you irons!

Allardyce would welcome Rio Ferdinand back

allardyce welcomes back rio ferdinand to west ham

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has said that he would welcome Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand back at Upton Park and the Boleyn Ground.

I’m sure the fans would be please, too including me! Allardyce has said that the door is open for a return in the light that Rio has just one year left on his current contract at Man U with red nosed boss Ferguson already trying to get the defender to sign a fresh deal.

Big Sam would welcome a return as this is where Rio cut his teeth before he moved to Leeds United and then onto mega stardom at Manchester United. And should Rio fancy a drive back down to London to finish off his footballing career, Sam would love to make it happen.

Sam Allardyce had this to say of the “Rio Gate” affair:

“If it’s at the end of the season and he hasn’t got a new contract and he is released by Manchester United, then we would be interested”.

“If he wants to live back in London eventually, which is where he comes from, which you know quite a few players want to do when they come to the end of their careers, that is an advantage for us”.

“It depends entirely on Rio or which other clubs might be interested in him”.

There you have it, from the horse’s mouth as it were. I would like to see Rio finish off his fantastic career down at West Ham and I’m sure most of the fans would, too. The Irons would be a good bet as Rio is originally from Peckham and the Hammers no doubt hold many fond memories for him. His brother Anton also plays for QPR so that could also be a Brucie bonus to get the sharp defender back down here.

What do the rest of the fans think about a Rio Ferdinand move back down south? Answers on a postcard please by 9’0 clock Monday morning!

Hammers still in limbo over Olympic stadium bid

olympic stadium bid postponed

It looks like the Hammers are having to wait a bit longer to see if their Olympic stadium bid has been successful or not. Hammers boss David Gold even tweeted that the postponement of the decision is “disappointing”.

There was a meeting of the board of the London Legacy Development Corporation yesterday and the outcome was that negotiations with the club had yet to reach a “definitive conclusion”. It’s sad really as the Hammers are offering Legacy the only real and viable solution to the stadium and being made to wait even longer for the outcome is painful for both West ham and its fans.

The main problem is how the 160 Million costs for retractable seating along with converting the stadium into a permanent venue are to be met.The Hammers are convinced that their tenancy would be the best option available and would easily pay off twice.

Hammers co-owner David Gold tweeted: “Sadly the decision on the Olympic Stadium has been postponed. We must be patient but resolute.”

It’s quite normal that the London Legacy Development Corporation are looking at other tenders but they also state that West Ham must make a considerable contribution to the costs of converting the stadium. They have also said that the Olympic stadium could pay for itself without football, too. Whether this is true or not, we don’t know but the next couple of weeks are critical for reaching an agreement on the Olympic stadium bid as both sides are keen to end the saga once and for all. It wouldn’t be of any interest to prolong the outcome although Dennis Hone, the LLDC chief executive, has stated that it could take a few months.

The £468m stadium that will boast a capacity of 60,000 in its post-games set-up has two other tenders vying for its services. An ambitious scheme by Leyton Orient to host Formula One in the Olympic Park and a football business college. Although Leyton Orient’s bid doesn’t seem too likely, the only real threat to the Hammers’ successful Olympic stadium bid is the football business college.

Having said that, the only real option is West Ham as it will guarantee a good home for the stadium and would put the Upton Park club firmly on the map.

Finally, for 20 days a year, UK Athletics has been guaranteed the use of the stadium along with sporting events, pop concerts and community day. Other uses will of course have to be liaised with the main tenants of the stadium and an events organizer.

Will Yossi Benayoun’s return spark West Ham creativity?

West Ham signed mercurial Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun from Chelsea on a season long loan for his second spell at The Boleyn Ground on transfer deadline day.

will yossi benayoun bring back the magic at west hamWhen we signed Yossi the first time around there was a lot of fans wondering how he would compare with former West Ham favourite and fellow Israeli Eyal Berkovic. Alan Pardew who was West Ham’s manager at the time was raving about his new signings ability to unlock defences when teams were sitting deep.

Benayoun had a productive first season for West Ham scoring 5 goals in the Premier League and contributing a further 8 Premier League assists.

I think Benayoun’s stand out performance for me was the FA Cup final against Liverpool in 2005-2006 which ended 3-3, he was a magician that day and controlled the midfield and was constantly probing Liverpool’s defence and did not deserve to be on the losing end that day.

Footballing Nomad

Yossi moved on from West Ham to Liverpool in 2007, he continued his excellent form and had a great understanding with Steven Gerrard in the middle of the park and made a number of significant contributions including a hat trick against Burnley in the Premier League. Benayoun also remains the only player to have scored Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup hat tricks.

Benayoun then moved on to Chelsea in 2010 where I don’t think he ever really settled and only made a handful of appearances before being farmed out to Arsenal for the duration of the 2011 campaign where he made 19 appearances scoring 4 goals.

Benny Confirms West Ham Return

Yossi has returned to West Ham United and became our eleventh summer signing on transfer deadline day, he has joined on a season long loan and I look forward to him adding some spark and creativity to our attack, Benny was a firm favourite of mine during his first spell at the club and I hope Sam Allardyce gives him a starting berth replacing the out of form Vaz Te.

I am very pleased about Yossi’s return as I am sure you can tell and am looking forward to seeing some silky skills on show, I think a front three of Jarvis, Carroll and Benayoun will prove to be very exciting!

I will leave you with a clip of a cheeky Yossi goal during his Chelsea time which I hope he can repeat for the mighty Hammers!

Carroll back for QPR game

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has given the club and fans a boost by announcing that striker Andy Carroll will make his return from injury in tonight’s Premier League derby with QPR.

andy carroll debut for hammersCarroll, 23, has been out for a month after injuring himself in his début game for the Hammers in the 3-0 victory over Fulham.

The big striker was rumoured to have been out for at least 6-weeks with the initial diagnosis of the injury but Allardyce revealed today that he has made excellent progress and is in line for a run out at QPR.

“He’s going to be back tonight,” Allardyce told talkSPORT today.

Great news for West Ham fans as Carroll really galvanised the team when he played his first match against Fulham.

I hope he is not rushed back into action as we really need a fit Andy Carroll and don’t need him to pick up any niggling injuries where he is put back in the team too soon.

Tonight we could see Jarvis and Carroll on the same pitch for once at some point which could prove to be very exciting.

West Ham will look to pile even more pressure on bottom of the table QPR tonight who are without a win in the Premier League this season, if we can start brightly and get an early goal Mark Hughes’ side will surely feel the pressure especially with the amount of players they have brought in over the summer, ex West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green being one of them.
