Post Match Report & Thoughts- Everton v West Ham 2017

A game between two teams in the bottom four- a fixture between a caretaker Everton manager (David Unsworth) and a former Everton manager (David Moyes) with the future Everton manager (Sam Allardyce, also previously a West Ham manager!) sitting in the stands.

Unfortunately for David Moyes, his troubles continue, with Everton handing his side a 4-0 thrashing at Goodison Park. Going into this game, the Toffees were the ones with the worst defensive record in the Premier League- at the end of the 90, that baton had been passed to West Ham, with Wayne Rooney scoring his first hat trick in EFC colours.

The game also ensured Moyes’ poor record against Everton after leaving Goodison Park continued- he now has gone five games without a win, and more shockingly, his teams have not managed to score a SINGLE goal against the Toffees [Read more…]

Post Match Thoughts- Watford v West Ham- Moyes’ first game ends in defeat

This was a tough, but perhaps winnable fixture for David Moyes- his first in charge of West Ham, and also his 500th game as a Premier League manager. It was also the only Match Week 12 game to be played that day.

Watford had lost three in a row coming into this game, two of those losses to teams in the bottom half of the table in Stoke and Everton, and were looking vulnerable, despite having home advantage. Moyes had been working on improving his side’s defence and fitness issues in training in the lead up to the game.

West Ham did put in an improved performance, but that was not enough to stop Watford from running out 2-0 winners. [Read more…]

Thanks for the memories Slav!

West Ham have officially confirmed today (November 6, 2017) that they have parted company with manager Slaven Bilic. The Hammers have endured a tough start to the season and despite Gold and Sullivan previously saying that they would let the 49 year old manage till the end of his contract (the end of the 17/18 season), the 4-1 loss to Liverpool that saw the Hammers drop into the relegation zone was one defeat too many for the board.

Bilic is the fourth Premier League manager to be sacked this season after Frank de Boer, Craig Shakespeare and Ronald Koeman.

Thanks for the memories Slav. You were dignified, passionate, honest and grace personified. None of us will not forget that 2015/16 season- the last one at the Boleyn that saw West Ham beat the likes of Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool, Spurs and Everton.

Bilic’s points per game record of 1.33 is the best of any permanent West Ham manager in the modern Premier League era. In the 87 games he managed, West Ham won 30, lost 31 and drew 26.

That final game at the Boleyn- to come from behind to beat Man Utd, was absolute magic.

A pity it didn’t all work out well- a mixture of some questionable tactics, transfers and board issues, but we’ll always remember you fondly. [Read more…]

Player Ratings- How the media rated our player performances vs Liverpool (H)

It wasn’t pretty to watch, and it shows in the ratings. West Ham lost 4-1 to Liverpool over the weekend, a result that saw them drop into the bottom three after Everton’s 3-2 win over Watford at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Here is how the media viewed and rated our players- this table is a compilation from five sources- Football.London, the Daily Mail, Sky, the Mirror and the Independent (all ratings out of 10)

The defence, not surprisingly, came in for criticism from all sources. However in the case of Edimilson Fernandes, playing out of position at RWB and taken off at half time for Andy Carroll, the Daily Mail thought he was “West Ham’s best player in the first half” and gave him a 7. West Ham v Liverpool Post Match Thoughts- More goals than all the 3pm kick offs put together!

This 5.30 pm clash had more goals (5) than all the other 3pm kick offs put together (4). All those 4 goals in the 3pm kick offs (Van la Parra, Cook, Vokes and Murray) were scored by ex-Brighton players.

Ok, putting the stats nerd in me aside, if you were a West Ham fan, then this game was another dark evening at the London Stadium, and given the rumours swirling around, also potentially Slaven Bilic’s last in charge of the club. At the time of writing of this article, West Ham have officially dropped into the relegation zone, with Everton winning a five goal thriller at Goodison Park against Watford (for whom ex-Everton player Tom Cleverley missed a late penalty) to climb out of the bottom three.

With Pablo Zabaleta suspended and Michail Antonio and Sam Byram both injured, Edimilson Fernandes was given the task of playing right wingback. The returning Winston Reid immediately slotted into central defence in place of Jose Fonte, who had picked up a knock in the 2-2 draw against Palace last week. [Read more…]
