Here is a minute by minute summary of all the key moments, opportunities, chances and (of course!) goals from West Ham’s 4-2 win over Burnley on November 3, 2018 (Saturday).
Both teams were neck and neck in the points table going into this Round 11 clash, with the same 2-2-6 record to show for their efforts after the first ten games.
West Ham started with a 4-1-4-1 and welcomed Marko Arnautovic back from illness. Aaron Cresswell got the nod ahead of Arthur Masuaku at left back- both apparently had issues ahead of the game, but Pellegrini said he’d go with the fitter player, and chose the former. Right back Pablo Zabaleta was named captain for the day in the absence of the suspended Mark Noble.
Burnley made three changes, with Jack Cork missing out on his first Premier League game since rejoining the Clarets last year. Cork’s absence meant Ashley Westwood started in midfield. Manager Sean Dyche also gave Czech international Matej Vydra a rare start, with the former Derby striker operating behind Sam Vokes.

7′– Pedro Obiang appears to be in a world of pain after a tackle from Ben Mee. After a small break in play, the Spaniard is eventually fine enough to continue. Replays show that Marko Arnautovic had also been involved in a collision with James Tarkowski moments earlier, and the Austrian is shown limping. Some fears among the West Ham faithful given that Arnautovic has essentially been managing a knee problem for over a month now.
9′– The free kick taken by West Ham is a poor one.
10′– Arnautovic gets one over Tarkowski! The Burnley defender is under pressure after receiving he ball from Westwood and makes a mess of his back pass to Joe Hart. Arnautovic pounces and makes sure to let Tarkowski know about it. 1-0 to West Ham.
13′– The first corner of the game for West Ham. A poor punch from Joe Hart, but Burnley clear.
20′– Arnautovic nearly makes it 2-0 after a beautiful exchange of passes with Felipe Anderson, but is denied by Hart.
25′– At Burnley’s first corner, Ben Mee heads towards goal. Fabianski gets ahead of Vydra, who really should’ve done better. First real chance for the Clarets.
32′– Another error from Westwood, and Burnley are nearly punished by Anderson. Hart cannot save his shot, but a last ditch brilliant clearance from Ben Mee on the goal line saves the Clarets.
34′– Diangana goes down under a challenge from Steven Defour, but referee Roger East refuses to award a penalty. Burnley boss Dyche agrees after the game that it was a penalty.
In the midst of all this, Anderson becomes the first player to get a yellow card in this game.
38′– Diangana nearly finds Arnautovic in space, but Aaron Lennon, tracking back, uses his pace to deny the Austrian.
45′– Against the run of play, Burnley score. Diop misses the first header. Balbuena and Cresswell hold a high line, but Gudmundsson beats the offside trap and scores. Assist from Westwood. 1-1 Burnley
45+2′– Obiang tries his luck from distance, but to no avail. That’s the third speculative attempt he’s tried in his half- clearly looking for a repeat of his wonder strike against Spurs!

49′– Long range attempt from Snodgrass. Hart parries it away, and the ball falls a little in front of him. Fortunately for Hart, no West Ham striker is on hand to tuck away the rebound
52′– Obiang attempts to set Arnautovic up, but the Austrian slips at a vital moment
54′– Poor option taking from Burnley on what could’ve been a good counter attacking chance for them.
55′– Arnautovic’s turn to go for a long range effort, Hart saves.
61′– First substitution of the afternoon- Javier Hernandez on for Pedro Obiang
63′– Well worked from the trio of Arnautovic, Anderson and Snodgrass, but Charlie Taylor gets to the ball before Hernandez
64′– Like they did ten minutes ago, poor decision making from Burnley on the counter.
65′– Defour perhaps lucky to escape a yellow
68′– Anderson scores. Arnautovic to Diangana, who gets absolutely clattered by Tarkowski but manages to get the ball away to Anderson, who fires through Hart’s legs. 2-1 to West Ham. Yellow card for Tarkowski.
71′– Hernandez appeals for handball, and is so busy appealing for it, that he doesn’t go for the ball that falls near his feet. Poor from the Mexican.
72′– Double substitution for Burnley. Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood on for Vokes and Vydra.
75′– Brady on for Lennon.
77′– The sub pays off. From a Brady corner, Wood heads in. Snodgrass marking Wood on the corner for some reason. 2-2 Burnley
79′– Anderson hits the woodwork, Hart well beaten. Great interplay from Diangana and Arnautovic
84′– Again a Diangana-Arnautovic-Anderson move, and this time the Brazilian scores. Some luck as it was deflected by Mee, but West Ham ahead. 3-2.
Sean Dyche very unhappy about an alleged foul on Barnes by Diop before the move that lead to the goal.
Diangana was about to be substituted, but earns more minutes on the pitch after his role in the goal.
85′– Beautiful run from Charlie Taylor, gets past Diangana and Zabaleta and produces a beautiful cross from Wood, who heads over. So nearly 3-3.
86‘- That’s the end of Diangana’s evening, and he’s replaced by Antonio
87′– Lowton goes into the book for a foul on Anderson. Snodgrass tries a unique set piece, and Anderson hits it with the outside of his boot. Saved by Hart.
89′- Very good chance for West Ham. Arnautovic could’ve probably gone on his own, but tries to find Hernandez, and Mee clears the danger.
90+1′– Arnautovic off, Angelo Obgonna on as West Ham add some defensive reinforcements.
90+2′– Good header from Antonio into Hernandez’s path, and Mexican takes two touches before chipping over Hart. 4-2 to West Ham and game over.
Barnes gets a yellow card for mouthing off to the ref.
Second half a more equal game. The 68-32 possession stat in favour of WHUFC at half time becomes 63-37. West Ham finish with 526 passes to Burnley’s 311.
