First League Double over Newcastle in 20 years, Outstanding Rice & More- Five Talking points from West Ham v NUFC

West Ham completed a league double over Newcastle as they beat the Magpies 2-0 at the London Stadium to climb to 9th in the league table. An early Declan Rice header and a penalty from Mark Noble were enough for the Hammers to see off the Magpies as they celebrated the inauguration of the Billy Bonds stand with a win over Rafa Benitez’s men.

Let’s take a look at the major talking points from this game.

League double over Newcastle for the first time in 20 years

This is the first time since the 1998/99 season that the Hammers have completed a Premier League double over the Magpies.

The interesting bit- Harry Redknapp’s men won 3-0 away and 2-0 at home that season, the same scorelines that Manuel Pellegrini’s men have managed this season!

Outstanding Rice

England assistant manager Steve Holland was in the stands for this game, presumably to watch the likes of Rice and rising Newcastle medio Sean Longstaff in action.

Rice put in another assured performance for the Hammers and topped it up with a goal. His defensive work was outstanding as usual, but it’s evident that the coaching staff are helping him with the attacking side of things as well- a couple of his passes around the 45th minute were very nice to watch. We didn’t get to see that side of Rice early in the season, and on this evidence, a England call up may not be too far away! Was also the official Premier League man of the Match for this game. West Ham 2-0 Newcastle 2019- Poor Magpies crash to defeat

West Ham extended their unbeaten run at the London Stadium to five games as they beat a poor Newcastle side 2-0 on Saturday evening. The result took the Hammers above Everton, with the Toffees being leapfrogged in the league standings after they could only manage a draw in their fixture against Liverpool.

Manuel Pellegrini made five changes to the side that had suffered defeat in midweek to Man City, with Manuel Lanzini getting his first start for the club in nearly ten months. Newcastle however chose to stick with the same XI that had done the business against Burnley.

The pre-match predictions were a mixed bag, but many expected Newcastle to give the Hammers a real run for their money. Unfortunately, they were very poor in the first half, and failed to register even one shot on target before the interval.

Some clever West Ham play from a Robert Snodgrass corner saw the home side take the lead through young midfielder Declan Rice. [Read more…]

West Ham v Newcastle predictions- How do the pundits think Manuel Pellegrini’s men will fare against the Magpies?

West Ham will be looking to complete a league double over Newcastle when they meet the Magpies at the London Stadium on Saturday evening. The Hammers will be facing a NUFC side that has lost just one of its last six games- a narrow 1-0 loss to Spurs last month.

The referee for this game is Chris Kavanagh, under whom Newcastle have won only one of their four top flight clashes. From the WHUFC point of view, Kavanagh has been in charge of three club games already this season- the 1-0 loss to Wolves, the 1-1 draw against Huddersfield and the 2-2 game against Brighton.

Mark Lawrenson: Lawro notes Newcastle’s excellent recent run (only one loss in last six in the league), and reckons they’re “flying at this moment”. Has predicted a 2-0 win for NUFC.

His celebrity opponent, sprinter Dina Asher-Smith has gone with a 1-1 draw.

Man City followed up their Carabao Cup win over the weekend with a 1-0 triumph over Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham at the Etihad on Wednesday evening. It kept the Citizens in the race for the title, with the defending champions only one point behind leaders Liverpool, who hammered Watford 5-0 at Anfield.

Man City v West Ham Predictions- What do the pundits think of our chances at the Etihad?

Manuel Pellegrini will be hoping for a maiden win as manager over Pep Guardiola when West Ham travel to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City.

The Hammers will be hoping that City’s congested fixture list- they played 120 minutes on Sunday against Chelsea in the EFL Cup final, plays into their hands. The defending champions will also be without key players like Aymeric Laporte and Fernandinho, who picked up knocks at Wembley and join Gabriel Jesus and John Stones in the treatment room.

The referee for this game is Stuart Attwell, under whom the Hammers are on a three game losing streak. He was the man with the whistle when they lost 3-1 to Spurs (EFL Cup) and 2-1 to Bournemouth (GW 2 in August)

By comparison, City have NEVER lost a Premier League under Attwell. Their record under him in the league reads P7- W6, D1
