Jose Fonte leaves West Ham to join Dalian Yifang in £5m deal

A little over a year after signing him from Southampton, West Ham have agreed to let Portuguese defender Jose Fonte leave the club, with the 34 year old set to move to Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Yifang for £5m.

Veteran Fonte, a Euro 2016 winner with Portugal, reportedly had his eyes on one last hurrah with the Portuguese national team at Russia 2018, and felt that regular football would stand him in good stead ahead of the quadrennial extravaganza.

Fonte last played for the Hammers in October against Crystal Palace and his departure effectively leaves West Ham with five options for 3 CB spots- Angelo Ogbonna, James Collins, Winston Reid, Aaron Cresswell and young Declan Rice. Jurgen Klopp’s side dismantled the Hammers 4-1 at the London Stadium earlier in the season- a result that cost Slaven Bilic his job. Current boss David Moyes is in no such danger, but points at Anfield will certainly help the visitors take a step closer to survival, which was his task when he took over the reins from the Croat in November. West Ham’s conquerors Wigan stun Man City in FA Cup

Losing 2-0 to Wigan suddenly doesn’t appear that bad! The Latics, who beat West Ham in the fourth round, stunned in form Man City 1-0 at the DW to book a last eight clash against Southampton. Saints could become Wigan’s fourth Premier League scalp (after AFCB, WHUFC and MCFC) in this season’s FA Cup campaign if they go down to Paul Cook’s League One side in March. [Read more…]

Ex Hammer Watch- Diafra Sakho scores two goals v Caen for Rennes

Former West Ham striker Diafra Sakho seems to have settled quite well back in France and scored his first league goals (to add to his Coupe de la Ligue effort) for Stade Rennais against Caen over the weekend. The game was quite an eventful one, featuring a brace from Sakho, two missed penalties from Caen, a late equaliser from the home side and Swiss officials in the middle and running the sidelines for this fixture, as part of a swap deal between the Swiss and the French Football Federations.
