Jose Fonte leaves West Ham to join Dalian Yifang in £5m deal

A little over a year after signing him from Southampton, West Ham have agreed to let Portuguese defender Jose Fonte leave the club, with the 34 year old set to move to Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Yifang for £5m.

Veteran Fonte, a Euro 2016 winner with Portugal, reportedly had his eyes on one last hurrah with the Portuguese national team at Russia 2018, and felt that regular football would stand him in good stead ahead of the quadrennial extravaganza.

Fonte last played for the Hammers in October against Crystal Palace and his departure effectively leaves West Ham with five options for 3 CB spots- Angelo Ogbonna, James Collins, Winston Reid, Aaron Cresswell and young Declan Rice. It is, one would say, a slight gamble for an injury hit squad that is fighting to stay up, but manager David Moyes reckons he has enough cover at the back.

Fonte was also instrumental in getting Joao Mario to the club, with the latter saying that the defender was a huge reason for him moving to the London Stadium on loan from Inter. William Carvalho, another of Fonte’s teammates in the Portuguese national team, was also willing to move before negotiations between Sporting and West Ham broke down.

Good luck Jose, and all the very best for the World Cup
