Stat Analysis- Referee announced for Crystal Palace v West Ham- Craig Pawson

The referee for West Ham’s game this weekend at Selhurst Park has been announced, and it’s Sheffield born Craig Pawson who will be the man in the middle for this clash.

The 39 year old has already refereed two games involving the Hammers this season- their 8-0 thrashing of Macclesfield in the Cup back in September, as well as their 2-1 win over Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton in December. That Saints game was also the last time Manuel Pellegrini’s men won on the road- they’ve lost four on the bounce since then.

Palace’s solitary game with Pawson at the helm this season saw them lose 1-0 to Chelsea in their final fixture of 2018.

Here’s an interesting stat for recent Pawson games that augurs quite well for West Ham- the last ten Premier League fixtures he’s officiated have seen the away team win 7 times. The three home wins were in the form of two Man City triumphs and one Chelsea victory. Pawson’s last game was the Everton Man City midweek clash at the Etihad, which was won by Pep Guardiola’s side as they replaced Liverpool at the top of the table. [Read more…]

Media player ratings- How did West Ham fare against Liverpool?

Liverpool dropped points for the second game in a row as they were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham at the London Stadium on Monday evening. The result means Man City can technically claim first spot if they beat Everton in their midweek game at Goodison Park. [Read more…]

Pundit Predictions- How will West Ham fare against Liverpool?

Game Week 25’s final fixture sees West Ham host Liverpool at the London Stadium. Jurgen Klopp’s Reds will be keen to re-establish their five point lead at the top after seeing rivals Man City convincingly beat Arsenal yesterday evening at the Etihad. West Ham, on the other hand, are seeking to stem a run of three defeats- they go into this fixture on the back of consecutive losses to Bournemouth, Wimbledon (FA Cup) and Wolves.

The Wolves performance was the poorest of the lot, with a reasonably full strength Hammers side (including Marko Arnautovic who later had to hobble off with a foot injury), going down rather tamely at Molineux.

Few will give West Ham any chance against Liverpool, who have a fantastic recent record against them, but as we know, the Hammers tend to raise their games for big name teams, and the London Stadium is not an easy place to travel to, as the likes of Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal will testify to.

Let’s take a look at what various pundits have to say about their predictions for this game. [Read more…]

No Arnie, No Party- Five talking points from Bournemouth v West Ham

West Ham fell to a disappointing defeat at the Vitality Stadium as Bournemouth completed a league double over them with a 2-0 win earlier today. Both goals came in the second half, one a fantastic volley from the boot of Callum Wilson and other in stoppage time from Joshua King.

Let’s take a look at our talking points from this game.

No Arnie, No Party: It’s obvious that West Ham are a better side with Marko Arnautovic in the starting XI. However the striker’s head appears to have been turned by an offer from China, and he wasn’t even in the squad for today’s fixture.

The likes of Felipe Anderson and Samir Nasri had some good attacking moments, and those might have amounted to more, if the Hammers had Arnautovic in the final third of the pitch instead of Andy Carroll. [Read more…]

Superb Declan, Fantastic Nasri and Was that a goodbye from Arnie?- 5 Talking Points from West Ham v Arsenal

West Ham claimed their first home victory over Arsenal since November 2006 as Declan Rice’s 48th minute goal, his first ever senior one for the club, helped them beat Unai Emery’s side 1-0. It was a fantastic achievement for the Hammers, who had won only one of their previous 23 games against the Gunners, and also made the 50th Premier League game at the London Stadium a memorable one.

Here are our talking points from the game

Superb Declan: Declan Rice gave another example of why he could become the next best defensive midfielder in the Premier League. Timely interceptions to thwart several Arsenal attacks, fantastic tackles, great strength on the ball, and a superb finish for the goal- it was a brilliant game for the teenager (only 2 days short of his 20th birthday!), and a very well deserved Man of the Match award for him. That shot of Rice hugging Mark Noble at the end is something that will remain etched in many a Hammers supporter’s mind for a long, long time.

Fantastic Nasri: Many fans, us included, were somewhat doubtful when Pellegrini signed Samir Nasri. On the evidence of this performance, it’s a fantastic one. The 31 year old was excellent for someone out of the game for 18 months- pressing hard, some nice interplay on the edge of the box between Anderson, Arnautovic and him, and providing an edge in attack that West Ham have sorely missed due to the absence of Manuel Lanzini. Despite his high work rate, Pellegri mentioned in the post match interview that Nasri could’ve played longer (he was subbed off), and that was a compliment to the Frenchman. Also provided the assist for Declan Rice’s winner. [Read more…]
