West Ham’s third kit hasn’t been very lucky for them in the current 2018/19 season. As on date, the Hammers have played four games in this grey alternate strip and haven’t won even one of them. They also failed to score in three of the four games, and the solitary goal they managed in the fourth game came from the penalty spot.
West Ham record with 2018/2019 third kit– Played 4, L3, D1, GF 1 (penalty), GA 9
All four of these games were away from home, and three of those four teams, with all due respect to them, are clubs against whom the Hammers would’ve expected to take at least a point, if not all three.
Matches in 2018-19 season played by West Ham in grey third kit
Liverpool 4-0 West Ham (August 12, 2018- GW 1)
West Ham’s first game of the season saw them beaten 4-0 by Liverpool at Anfield.
Burnley 2-0 West Ham (December 30, 2018- GW 20)
The Hammers’ final game of the calendar year saw them crash to defeat at Turf Moor
Bournemouth 2-0 West Ham (19 January, 2018- GW 23)
Another away defeat in the grey third uniform for Manuel Pellegrini’s men, with goals from Joshua King and Callum Wilson giving Bournemouth victory at the Vitality Stadium.
Crystal Palace 1-1 West Ham (9 February, 2019- GW 26)
The only game played so far in the third kit that saw West Ham avoid defeat. It was however a game they could very easily have lost had Palace not been wasteful in front of goal (McArthur, Benteke and Batshuayi all had very decent chances)
Interestingly enough, all four of these games had Angelo Ogbonna playing in the centre of defence. The Fabian Balbuena-Issa Diop pairing has usually been Pellegrini’s first choice, with Italian Ogbonna effectively being the back up centre half in the absence of Winston Reid.
The grey third kit has also been worn in different combinations, with the socks and the shorts changing for certain games, as the pics below will tell you. There have been three different variations in the four games with the third kit so far.
