According to West Ham there will be no sharing of the new £486m Olympic Stadium with League One boys Leyton Orient. Apparently, the Hammers are dismissing orient’s chairman, Barry Hearn over his ever-changing position. The Hammers even went on to say that Hearn’s comments provide a “a constant source of amusement”.
Barry Hearn never wanted the Hammers to move into the new Olympic stadium and opposed ideas. He was also party to a legal challenge that saw an original deal fall to pieces and the to add further insult, he even challenged the legitimacy of our renewed tenancy bid for the stadium. Is this guy for real?
Just this week it appears that Hearn has a new idea and now wished to ground share with the irons providing the West Ham board win their argument for retractable seats on the athletics track. This has been a sore point with Hammer fans as the pitch is way too far from the actual stadium seating but I think we will win the case on this.
West Ham wants to become the main tenant and quite rightly so and they have spelled it out to the London Legacy Development Corporation. How can the hammers share with Orient? Two East London clubs sharing one stadium spells a recipe for disaster if you ask me. Ok, the Hammers would have to “share” in a way in the form of athletics meeting and the like but at least they won’t be sharing with big mouth Hearn.
A spokesman for the Hammers had this to say: “Our message to our supporters remains consistent. We will deliver a world-class football arena that feels like home to our fans. If our bid is successful we believe it will offer the best opportunity to take the club to the next level.” The club added that they had “not held talks with Leyton Orient in respect of ground sharing and nor is it our intention to do so”.
West Ham won’t know their fate until after the Olympic games. They were supposed to know last month but a few spanners in the works have prolonged the process further – unbelievable really! The deadline was extended to allow those who expressed an interest but did not bid. What a joke. If they expressed a desire to be the main tenants but didn’t bid, then they missed the boat as far as I’m concerned.
What are your views on this? The Hammers don’t really want to share with Leyton Orient, do they? It’s just not right 🙂
