Will Yossi Benayoun’s return spark West Ham creativity?

West Ham signed mercurial Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun from Chelsea on a season long loan for his second spell at The Boleyn Ground on transfer deadline day.

will yossi benayoun bring back the magic at west hamWhen we signed Yossi the first time around there was a lot of fans wondering how he would compare with former West Ham favourite and fellow Israeli Eyal Berkovic. Alan Pardew who was West Ham’s manager at the time was raving about his new signings ability to unlock defences when teams were sitting deep.

Benayoun had a productive first season for West Ham scoring 5 goals in the Premier League and contributing a further 8 Premier League assists.

I think Benayoun’s stand out performance for me was the FA Cup final against Liverpool in 2005-2006 which ended 3-3, he was a magician that day and controlled the midfield and was constantly probing Liverpool’s defence and did not deserve to be on the losing end that day.

Footballing Nomad

Yossi moved on from West Ham to Liverpool in 2007, he continued his excellent form and had a great understanding with Steven Gerrard in the middle of the park and made a number of significant contributions including a hat trick against Burnley in the Premier League. Benayoun also remains the only player to have scored Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup hat tricks.

Benayoun then moved on to Chelsea in 2010 where I don’t think he ever really settled and only made a handful of appearances before being farmed out to Arsenal for the duration of the 2011 campaign where he made 19 appearances scoring 4 goals.

Benny Confirms West Ham Return

Yossi has returned to West Ham United and became our eleventh summer signing on transfer deadline day, he has joined on a season long loan and I look forward to him adding some spark and creativity to our attack, Benny was a firm favourite of mine during his first spell at the club and I hope Sam Allardyce gives him a starting berth replacing the out of form Vaz Te.

I am very pleased about Yossi’s return as I am sure you can tell and am looking forward to seeing some silky skills on show, I think a front three of Jarvis, Carroll and Benayoun will prove to be very exciting!

I will leave you with a clip of a cheeky Yossi goal during his Chelsea time which I hope he can repeat for the mighty Hammers!

Carroll back for QPR game

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has given the club and fans a boost by announcing that striker Andy Carroll will make his return from injury in tonight’s Premier League derby with QPR.

andy carroll debut for hammersCarroll, 23, has been out for a month after injuring himself in his début game for the Hammers in the 3-0 victory over Fulham.

The big striker was rumoured to have been out for at least 6-weeks with the initial diagnosis of the injury but Allardyce revealed today that he has made excellent progress and is in line for a run out at QPR.

“He’s going to be back tonight,” Allardyce told talkSPORT today.

Great news for West Ham fans as Carroll really galvanised the team when he played his first match against Fulham.

I hope he is not rushed back into action as we really need a fit Andy Carroll and don’t need him to pick up any niggling injuries where he is put back in the team too soon.

Tonight we could see Jarvis and Carroll on the same pitch for once at some point which could prove to be very exciting.

West Ham will look to pile even more pressure on bottom of the table QPR tonight who are without a win in the Premier League this season, if we can start brightly and get an early goal Mark Hughes’ side will surely feel the pressure especially with the amount of players they have brought in over the summer, ex West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green being one of them.

Mark Noble agrees new West Ham contract

Reports are coming out today that Mark Noble has finally put pen to paper on a new deal with West Ham United.

Noble is in the final year of his contract and West Ham needed to get this contract signed as a number of Premier League clubs were thought to have been keeping tabs on Mr. Noble with the idea of getting him for a minimal fee in January or on a free transfer next summer.

Noble, 25,  who has come through West Ham’s famous academy, has already notched up over 200 games for West Ham since making his début in a 2-0 win over Southend in the League Cup as a 17-year-old.

Last season was a stand out season for Noble who really started to shine in West Ham’s midfield and he found himself picking up West Ham’s Player of The Season gong for his efforts.

West Ham have not confirmed this news as yet, but Sky Sports are reporting Noble is to sign a three-year extension to his current deal.

This will be a huge boost to manager Sam Allardyce who would loathe to lose one of his best midfield players for nothing at the end of the season.

Great news for West Ham as Mark Noble is a local lad and has been outstanding for West Ham for a while now, who could forget his 98% pass completion ratio against Fulham!

Looking forward to the cup game against Wigan tomorrow and I hope Jarvis, Benayoun and Maiga all get a start as we need something different up front.

Norwich 0 – 0 West Ham United – Match Report

West Ham and Norwich drew 0-0 at Carrow Road yesterday with Norwich still looking for their first win in the league under new manager Chris Hughton.

The first half was the real highlight of the game for me with some end to end football with both teams having some good chances to open the scoring.

First Half Chances

There was an early opportunity for West Ham in the when a corner was only half cleared and the ball was smashed across goal by Matt Taylor.

Norwich then went down the other end and Surman cut inside the West Ham box after a break down the left and curled the ball just wide of the far post.

On 13 minutes Ricardo Vaz Te got away down the right hand side and his cross was met by the head of Carlton Cole, but it was cleared off the line, with Taylor smashing the rebound wide from a very good position where he should have scored.

Penalty Claim

Norwich thought they should have had a penalty when Surman was upended by Collins as he darted into the penalty box, it was a true heart in your mouth moment for West Ham fans as it looked a stonewall penalty, however on closer inspection the ref called it bang on with the foul being committed just on the edge of the penalty box.

Second Half

The second half was nowhere near as action packed as the first half and was a pretty dire affair with both sides lacking any real quality in the final third.

Modibo Maiga replaced Carlton Cole but didn’t really have any chances to pounce upon, however Matt Jarvis on his comeback from injury put a few lovely crosses into the box which I am sure Andy Carroll will be licking his lips at the thought of getting on the end of.

Harry Kane, a 19-year-old on loan from Spurs almost nicked all three points for Norwich when he was played into the box in injury time only to scuff his shot straight at Jaaskelainen.

A point each was about right with neither team really doing enough to win the match, however it’s another clean sheet for West Ham who have picked up 7 points from their opening 4 games which is a return I would have accepted at the beginning of the season.

Jaaskelainen’s Kicking

I was however very concerned with Jussi Jaaskelainen’s kicking, it was atrocious and almost cost us on several occasions with poor clearances going straight to the opposition. This was not the first time either as he has had some terrible clearances in our other matches and it can’t keep happening before we get punished.

It’s not all bad though as his shot stopping has been excellent and I have felt very comfortable with him between the sticks, but I do think Big Sam needs him working on his kicking non stop until he sorts it out!

And Finally…

Ricardo Vaz Te put in his worst performance in a West Ham shirt yesterday, he was getting in some great positions but his passing and crossing was terrible and he should have been hauled off long before he was eventually replaced by Yossi Benayoun as it just wasn’t happening for him.

It wasn’t just Vaz Te though, the final ball was very poor and had we been picking some better passes or crosses the result may have been very different.

Anyway, bring on Sunderland and lets hope for an Andy Carroll miracle recovery!

Yossi Benayoun returns to West Ham

yossi benayoun transfer

Yossi Benayoun has returned to West Ham United on a season long loan from Chelsea.

West Ham were relatively quiet on transfer deadline day, having made the majority of their signings in advance other than Andy Carroll who signed on loan yesterday.

Benayoun left West Ham for Liverpool 5-years ago and returns to The Boleyn looking for regular first team football having never really made an impact at Chelsea and having a quite loan spell with Arsenal last season.

Welcome back Benny lets hope you can find the same form you have in the FA Cup final against Liverpool!
