West Ham v Man City 2019 Predictions- What do pundits think of the Hammers’ chances in season opener?

West Ham begin the 2019/20 Premier League season today afternoon against defending champions Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side witnessed title rivals Liverpool get their campaign off to a winning start against Norwich last night, and will be keen to open their account as well.

The Hammers’ new summer signing Sebastian Haller jokingly said “What a sh** game to start with” ahead of this clash, but given City’s dazzling list of superstars, it’s perhaps a sentiment echoed by many West Ham fans. This is the sixth straight season where the Hammers are opening their campaign against top six opposition.

Let’s take a look at what various TV pundits have predicted for this WHUFC v City clash.

Mark Lawrenson: Lawro notes that City have scored four or more goals in their last four trips to the London Stadium, but thinks it will “not be so easy” for them this time.

Has gone for a narrow 2-1 win to City.

Lawro’s celeb opponents this weekend- Helen Housby and Jo Harten, have predicted City to emerge more comfortable winners with 3-1 and 4-0 scorelines respectively.

Charlie Nicholas: Nicholas reckons this transfer window hasn’t been the best for West Ham. Reckons City will make a statement here, with Kevin de Bruyne on the scoresheet. Has gone for a 3-0 City victory.

Stan Collymore: The former Liverpool and Forest striker has also predicted three goals for City, but reckons the Hammers will score too. 3-1 to Pep Guardiola’s side.

Kevin Kilbane: Kilbane notes that while West Ham can be tricky opponents, he doesn’t think they quite have what it needs to trouble City. Another win for Pep’s men, with both teams to score, and expects Sterling to find the back of the net.

Michael Owen: Owen reckons West Ham will need to defend better than they did in their final two pre-season games against Hertha and Athletic, but is excited to see what Fornals and Haller can do. Like Kilbane, has gone for a City win and both teams to score.

Summary of predictions

Mark Lawrenson: West Ham 1-2 Man City
Helen Housby: West Ham 1-3 Man City
Jo Harten: West Ham 0-4 Man City
Stan Collymore: West Ham 1-3 City
Kilbane & Owen: City to win, but both teams to score.
