Uninspiring draw at St Mary’s for West Ham United

It was a rather limp game, which ended in a 0-0 draw at St Mary’s this weekend for West Ham United.

The first half was lifeless to say the least with few chances from either side although stopper Jussi Jaaskelainen had to be on his toes to stop Saints new boy Dani Osvaldo from getting off the mark.

Mo Diame also had a chance at the start of the game but keeper Artur Boruc was there to deny the Hammers’ midfielder. Diame then committed a silly foul on Southampton’s Adam Lallana and was promptly given a yellow card by ref Andre Marriner.

Minutes after, captain fantastic Kevin Nolan had a goal disallowed after Matt Jarvis was adjudged to be offside, which riled the Upton park outfit.

Sam Allardyce was unhappy when Saints’ Morgan Schneiderlin lunged at Mo Diame. Though the French midfielder was shown to win the ball, big Sam’s complaints were aimed at the speed and nature of the nasty tackle.

Allardyce gave promising starlet Ravel Morrison his first Premier League start and the youngster was determined to impress. He tested Artur Boruc with a 25 yarder that whistled over his crossbar.

The Saints upped their game in the second half and started to cause the Hammers some problems. Victor Wanyama had a nice spell in the second half as Southampton began to find their feet.

Razvan Rat came on for Guy Demel in the second half in a bid to turn things around for the Hammers.Mark Noble then found himself in the ref’s book for a late challenge on Dejan Lovren.

Jaaskelainen was to ring his A game again for the Hammers, denying a Morgan Schneiderlin volley which looked destined for the back of Jussi’s goal.

As the game petered out Allardyce’s men could have snatched victory at the death.A cut-back only managed to find James Collins, whose attempt from the edge of the area looked like something Johnny Wilkinson would have been proud of!

That was it I’m afraid. A rather drab and dull game in which Allardyce’s men snatched a single point. It could have been worse as Southampton upped their game in the second half and it could have ended nicely if Collins’ shot had found it’s target.

About Stevo

Stevo can remember going to games with his Dad and seeing the likes of Clyde Best of all people. He also has a few mates who have “done” complete seasons too – and that was when the Irons were in division one. That’s every home and away game – unbelievable! Stevo plans to do this himself next season!

  1. Hello all West Ham fans
I know the season has only started but I hope never to watch as bad a game again, kids playing in the park would of put them to shame. And the fans that travelled to watch that game the club should give them there money back and Big Sam and what he called a team would anyone pay them. Now I must be fair the goalie was outstanding, and I never seen Noble playing as bad. Anytime he got the ball he give it away my rating for the whole team from 1 to 10 is a hard pushed 2 it was the most awful game I have watch in a long time
