Downing strikes back at Roger’s comments

Stewart Downing, the Hammers’ new signing, has hit back at his former Liverpool boss by stating that his move down south to the Boleyn Ground was not motivated by cash.

Downing’s ex manager Brendan Rogers, had stated that the England international wasn’t originally intended to be sold but was ‘offered a really good deal at West Ham United’.

Speaking about Stewart Downing, Rogers had this to say to the Liverpool Echo:

“He wasn’t one we were pushing out of the door. After the early part of last season, he became a very valuable member of the squad.”

“But he gets the chance to go to West Ham, picks up a long-term deal, plays week in, week out and at this stage of his career that’s obviously what he wanted.”

But the ex Liverpool player insisted that it was the Anfield club  who pulled the strings to move him on.

“They said they wanted to keep me but they accepted a fee,” said Downing to The Sun.

“I don’t know about ‘an incredible deal’ – I got a four-year contract.

“I’m disappointed that one minute I was staying, the next I was gone.”

The 29 year-old began last season out of favour with Brendan Rodgers but eventually found his game to become a key member of the squad before the end of May.

Downing would like to play in next year’s World Cup in Brazil and to be within a shout, has to play. This is something that West Ham can offer the lad and not his old club.

About Stevo

Stevo can remember going to games with his Dad and seeing the likes of Clyde Best of all people. He also has a few mates who have “done” complete seasons too – and that was when the Irons were in division one. That’s every home and away game – unbelievable! Stevo plans to do this himself next season!

Downing is a Hammer! End off! Not interested what went on before and are even less interested in lfc! Bit skick of them making huge financial blunders and then crying about it and blaming everybody else for it! Big Andy and Joe Cole have been different class since joining the Irons and if Stewart turns out the same way then ill be a Happy Hammer! All about trust, faith, honesty a clear plan and excellent man management! Brenda take note! COYI!

  3. Downing you don’t worth 20million that kenney paid for you. you can’t score nor cross some superb ball for strikers. you are now 29, if we keep you, normally we will have to let you go freely within the next transfer market. so why not to cash in some penny and let you move now

    • But you didn’t Cash in, he moved for very little money. Rodgers is a sneaky manipulative guy doing everything underhandedly and now blaming the player. Even if Messi was at Liverpool Rodgers would move him on as it wasn’t him that brought him in and that is all there is too it.

      • It’s about damn time we had a ruthless manager. I don’t like how he is so full of shit. I really wouldn’t listen to anything Rodgers says, but importantly he is taking action and getting rid of so many of our waste of space players. Plus I like the transfers targets. Honestly there was nobody in the squad I wanted to see the back of more than Downing (after Carroll). He has absolutely no heart, when he plays. And to your point Borini hardly ever plays … I think he is very fair in terms of form to appearances.
