Stuart Downing insists on staying at Anfield despite Hammer interest

Despite lots of rumours this week linking Stuart Downing to a move southwards to the Boleyn Ground, the winger, who has struggled last season with his form, insists on staying with the Reds to fight for a first team place at Anfield.

The England international has been linked with a move to West Ham United but has insisted on staying at Anfield this summer.

The 28 year old’s form this season hasn’t been up to par, thus sparking a possible move to Sam Alalrdyce’s team.

Although West Ham United and Allardyce have said that they may not be able to afford the winger anyway, assistant manager at West Ham Neil McDonald, welcomed the idea of Stuart Downing joining the East End club.

The former Middlesbrough and Aston Villa man said that he “was here to stay” on the club’s website.

“I’m here to stay,” he told the club’s official website. “I’m enjoying it – especially last season. I got a good run in the team. Hopefully that will continue, and I need to work hard.

“I want it to continue. It’s why I came here – to play in a successful team. I want that to continue as long as possible.”

The Reds are currently in Indonesia as part of the first leg of their pre-season summer tour and the players have been mobbed by fans every step of the way.

Many hundreds of fans came to greet the Liverpool players at the airport on Wednesday and one particular fan caught the eye of Stuart Downing. The banner read ‘Stay here SD19 – don’t go away’.

“It’s brilliant to have people behind you, the fans,” added Downing. “When they’re behind you, you want to do well for them and play well.

“We had a bit of a laugh about it on the bus but all in good spirits.

“There were great scenes and the lads are happy to be here.

So, it looks like another possible signing has escaped the Hammers and in my opinion should focus on bringing Columbian hit man Duvan Zapata to the Boleyn Ground at all costs. Apparently there is a small hiccup with his permit but I’m sure the Hammers can pull this one off.

About Stevo

Stevo can remember going to games with his Dad and seeing the likes of Clyde Best of all people. He also has a few mates who have “done” complete seasons too – and that was when the Irons were in division one. That’s every home and away game – unbelievable! Stevo plans to do this himself next season!
