West Ham chasing Zapata

West Ham United have reportedly seen a fee agreed with Argentinian club Estudiantes for Colombian striker Duvan Zapata.

The Mirror reports that West Ham have already agreed a fee of £6.7 million for the powerful striker and are now just waiting on a work permit.

Duvan Zapata

Zapata, 22, is a powerful 6 foot 2 inch striker who had a fantastic season for his club Estudiantes last season, scoring 14 goals in 22 games.

It would be a something of a coup for the Hammer’s to land the striker as Lyon, Benfica, Porto and Udinese are all accredited with an interest in bringing the player to Europe.

West Ham appear to be on a striker hunt at the moment, with the club being strongly linked with bringing in Wilfried Bony this week, so I wonder if Big Sam is looking to shake up the tried and tested formation of 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 which he has preferred the last two seasons, or is he just looking for some quality backup for Carroll who may not be fit for the start of the season as he is still nursing a heel injury.

Interestingly enough though, Zapata is treading a familiar path for Colombian players by first moving to Argentina and then making the leap to European football, the last two were James Rodriguez and the goal scoring phenomenon that is Radamel Falcao who are both now playing for one of the new mega rich clubs Monaco.

Searching around I found some nice videos on YouTube, have a look at the one below as he looks like he could be a real handful, and at 22 years old he looks to be an excellent prospect.

  1. We should not underestimate the affect that Carlos Tevez had in Argentina, signing for a club no-one there had heard of and then going on to huge success in the Prem. This lad probably thinks that after a year with us, he’ll be off to somewhere bigger and winning the Champions’ League too
