West Ham United’s Joe Cole has remarked that he was wrong to go to Liverpool stating that he wasn’t passionate about the Reds.
Joe Cole left Chelsea as a free agent and didn’t have much choice. He could not see himself at North London rivals Tottenham so chose Anfield instead and spent two and a half years regretting the decision.
Cole, who is back at the Boleyn ground for his second spell as a Hammer concedes that he made the wrong choice by heading north to Merseyside.
Speaking to The Sun newspaper, Joe Cole had this to say:
“I can only play for teams that I’m passionate about and I think that’s what went wrong for me at Liverpool.
“I didn’t feel a connection with the club or the place that I had at Chelsea and West Ham.
“I had seven great years at Chelsea but the club wanted to go in a certain direction and I wasn’t involved. So I was left with two real options – Liverpool or Spurs.
“Spurs was probably the best option because they were offering me a five-year deal and it meant I could stay in familiar surroundings.
“But I just couldn’t do it, I just couldn’t see myself pulling that Spurs shirt over my head. With the rivalry between Spurs and West Ham and Chelsea, it felt a bit mercenary.”
Having re-joined the club that helped to launch his career, Cole is hoping to recapture his best form and hang up his boots as a West Ham player.
He finished by adding: “I got an opportunity to go back to West Ham and I don’t want to move any more.”
31 year-old Joe Cole had to come off the pitch after just 10 minutes in last week’s one nil victory over Stoke at the Britannia ground.
With a damaged hamstring Cole looks set to miss the Chelsea clash at the weekend and could face a month out of action.
