West Ham keen on Ecuador winger

West Ham United are reportedly keen on Ecuadorian winger Jefferson Montero.

SkySports are reporting that West Ham and a trio of other clubs from the Premier League are all chasing the 23-year-old wide man.

Montero currently plays for Mexican team Morelia, however he has played in Europe before having signed for Spanish La Liga team Villarreal as a 20-year-old and had further European experience by being loaned out to Real Betis and Levante.

Jefferson Montero

There is a £3.5 million buy out clause in Montero’s contract, and with a number of scouts from English teams having watched him play the full 90 minutes of Ecuador’s World Cup qualifying draw with Argentina earlier this month, it could be only a matter of time before he gets his chance in the Premier League.

Dan Chapman of Contact Sports told SkySports:

Jefferson is ready to move to England.

We can confirm a number of clubs are showing an interest, which is not surprising after his performance against Argentina last week.

We all know Sam Allardyce likes a quick player out wide, but with the club already having the services of Matt Jarvis, Joe Cole and Ricardo Vaz Te in those positions, it remains to be seen if West Ham will make a move for the player.

However, with Ricardo Vaz Te being linked with a move away from the club to help fund the Andy Carroll signing there could be some legs in this rumour.

  1. People make me laugh when they talk about vaz te. He is a striker/centre forward who played all of last season out of position, usually as a right winger and who with the system BFS uses quite often finds himself defending as much as he attacks. For me he did a reasonable job. Albeit in the championship he scored 12 goals from 18 appearances last year for us when playing in a more central role, either up top alone or playing off of Carlton cole. BFS tried in the championship to play both maynard, baldock and vaz te out wide- all strikers, and only vaz te could adapt. Although Jarvis vastly improved particularly towards the end of the season, we paid £10.75 million for Jarvis, over the course of the season was he really that much better than vaz te. My point is for a striker he did a decent job last year and this is all too quickly forgotten

I think that, looking at the way Sam Allardyce wants to play, Matt Jarvis has really found his range when crossing the ball. Especially when compared to Vaz Te who doesn’t IMHO. Consider that MJ is also starting to take players on, cut the ball back from the by-line as well as having a few decent digs at goal himself, he’s got more to offer this West Ham team than Ricardo.

He did do well as a striker I agree and he is playing out of position, but in Big Sam’s eyes there is only one striker in our team which is Andy Carroll so RVT needed to adapt to play, but considering he is only really ever going to play out wide then I think it’s best we get a quality player in who is more comfortable there.

It would be interesting to see RVT play up front but I can’t see that happening unless Carroll gets injured.

First time poster on your blog. Have been posting on another one for a number of years. Best of luck with it.

This is a good write up of a player I was unaware of. Looks a good prospect. At £3.5M I reckon he might be worth a punt. Like AOI & Baz have said – can he be any worse than Vaz Te?

    COYI!

Thanks GoatyGav, hope you enjoy the blog!

Vaz Te was good for us in The Championship and did a job, but he has never shown anything near that level in the prem… I think if we want to move forward then we need to chop players like Vaz in and improve with Prem quality so by the time we move into our shiny new ground we have a squad worthy of it!

Agree mate. He’s shown flashes of the promotion season’s form (Brilliant, Quick feet for Mo Diame’s goal vs Man Utd) but possibly a little out of his depth. Then again – if Sam Allardyce fancies him then he won’t be moved on. Only time will tell I guess.
        Cheers 🙂

Still plenty of time until transfer deadline day and I think our squad will change by at least 3-5 players before then so will be interesting to see what happens!

Might be another Barerra when he came to West Ham??

On another note how do you get “quick player out wide” and “Vez Te” in the same sentence?

    • Iron Bobby says

To be fair Barrera did look pretty good before he signed for us! I watched him for Mexico and thought hold tight this could be good! Doh!

Well Vaz Te does play out wide 🙂

  4. I think Vaz Te needs to move on so this guy could be good, might be another Valencia when he went to Wigan?
