West Ham United stepped up their pre-season training this week and followed up their win over Cork in Ireland with a 3-0 victory at Boreham Wood.
Lots of transfer speculation again this week with the club being linked with a number of forwards as well as a few midfielder players, which is interesting as West Ham Manager Sam Allardyce has said the club are only looking for one more quality player, so is it a striker or midfielder? I think we need both.
Lukaku going nowhere
West Ham were linked with making a loan offer for Romelu Lukaku last week, which was always going to be a long shot after the player had such an impressive loan spell at West Brom last year, however the Daily Express have reported this morning that Mourinho has told Lukaku that he will be getting his chance with The Blues this season, so West Ham will need to look elsewhere for a striker to compete with Carroll.
Inter Milan’s Zdravko Kuzmanovic
With West Ham looking pretty light in the middle of the park, especially after Gary O’Neil appeared to sign for the club again and then not sign, West Ham need to add another player into the mix which is where Inter Milans’ Serbian midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic comes in.
TalkSport are suggesting West Ham are making a move for the 25-year-old Serbian international.
Andy Carroll’s fitness
Some welcome news for West Ham yesterday was Assistant Manager Neil McDonald stating he believes there is plenty of time for Andy Carroll to get back to fitness in time for the new season. I hope the big number 9 is ready for the opener with new boys Cardiff on August 17th as without him we are looking very thin up front with the club failing to sign another striker so far this window.
Joe Cole showed some ambition yesterday, having re-signed for us in January Cole is looking to help West Ham to some silverware this season, it seems Wigan and Swansea winning the cups last year has really buoyed teams outside the top 6 that winning a domestic trophy is possible.
West Ham were apparently getting set to sign Colombian Duvan Zapata at the weekend but all has gone quite on this front since the story was broke.
Graham Dorrans was also strongly linked with West Ham still looking to add depth to the midfield and another unlikely target was Stewart Downing which I have my doubts about as I can’t see Liverpool looking to lose another huge pile of cash on a player to West Ham in one transfer window.
I still think West Ham need at least two quality players in this window rather than the one which Allardyce has inferred, I think a quality striker is a must as well as another central midfield player, if we can get two more in before the window shuts in these positions then I will be a happy Hammer.
Finally it was pleasing to see Ravel Morrison getting on the score sheet against Boreham Wood, I think after a good season of first team football under his belt at Birmingham we could finally see Morrison in the West Ham first team and showcasing the undoubted ability that he has.
